What
to think about when having your computer repaired
-
Is
it worth it? While we don't want to discourage potential business
from any client, you need to decide if the equipment is worth repairing.
Because of rapid changes in technology and the constant downward
pressure on prices, the cost effectiveness of fixing an old computer may
not make sense. Also, as equipment ages, replacement parts may become
more scarce and thus more expensive.
I once had a customer that was willing to have her machine fixed until I
pointed out to her that after the cost of fixing it, she would have
spent approximately half the cost of a new computer. And, in the end,
she would still have a 5 year old computer. In this case, she felt that
purchasing a new computer made the most sense. On the other hand, I know
someone who is still using a 386 computer that is about 14 years old.
When the floppy drive failed, I suggested that the cost of a floppy
drive was greater than the value of the entire machine at that point.
However, because of a particular sentimental attachment to that machine,
the drive was replaced and this customer is still using it every day!
There is also the environmental aspect to consider. Many people don't
want to contribute needlessly to the ever increasing quantity of
electronics that end up in our nations landfills. The Net Result can
help you to find appropriate means of disposing of your old equipment.
We can advise you as to where you can recycle your old equipment, or we
can handle it for you. Depending on the situation, there may or may not
be a fee for disposal, but rest assured that the cost of recycling will
be maintained at the lowest level possible. Often any cost associated
with the disposal of equipment can be offset by the salvaging of usable
components.
The bottom line in assessing whether to have it repaired or not is a
very personal decision. If you are unsure as to what to do, give The Net
Result a call and we'll do our best to provide unbiased, objective
information so you can make a decision that is right for you.

On
site or In shop? Generally speaking, In Shop repairs are less
expensive than On Site. Particularly when the problem might be a virus
or spy ware issue. The repair process can involve lengthy scans of the
hard drive and sometimes requires specialized techniques or additional
research that may not be readily available. On the other hand, some
issues, such as internet connection problems, can sometimes only be
solved while at the customers location. If you're unsure as to how to
proceed, give us a call and describe your situation. We'll help you make
the right choice.

Is
Your Data Backed Up? Once you've made the decision to go ahead with
a repair, you should let The Net Result know the status and
importance of your data. While all reasonable precautions will be taken
to safeguard and prevent the loss of data, there is no guarantee that
any data associated with the computer will remain intact. This includes
files, folders, or programs installed on the computer or media left in
any drives.
If the data is important to you, attempts can be made to recover it from
the system during servicing. However, you must be aware that this
process can be lengthy and will usually involve additional cost in
excess of any normal repair charges. In regards to data recovery you
have the following options and should indicate your preference:
ð No Data Recovery is
Required. I have a verified, available backup of all critical
information on the system or there is nothing on the system that is
critical. I also have available all installed software and drivers.
ð Reasonable Attempts to
Recover Data Are Requested. I have information on this computer that
is important to me and I would like to recover it. I understand that
this may involve additional time and expense but feel that the cost
would be lower than trying to recreate the data on my own.
ð Extreme Attempts to Recover
Data Are Requested. The data on this computer is critical to me and
I would be at a severe disadvantage if it were not recovered. I do not
have a verifiable backup and this information can not be easily
recreated. The Net Result is a service partner with OnTrack
Data Recovery and can assist you in utilizing their services.

What
Should You Bring? If you have decided to have an "in shop" repair of
your computer, there are several items to make sure and bring in order
to expedite the repair. If your computer is a laptop, please make sure
to bring the AC power adapter. There are many different types of
adapters available and we might not have one available to connect to
your computer. If it is a desktop pc, just bring the unit itself. There
is usually no need for power cords, the keyboard, mouse, or monitor
unless any of these items are also in need of repair. Be sure to bring
the operating system/ recovery CD and any application software you want
reinstalled, in case we have to perform a complete reinstallation.
-
Anything Else? If you use passwords (login, e-mail, etc.) or encrypt
files on your computer, we might need the passwords for such things. If
you've forgotten any of your passwords, we can usually either recover or
reset them for you. If you have specific information you want entered,
such as user names, computer descriptions, etc., please make sure and
let us know.
